Disclaimer
I guess there comes a time for everything. I recently received a semi-nasty comment so now is the time for me to straighten a few things out.
If you have read my page about me, you already know that I haven't claimed to be an expert on homeschooling. When someone sends me an email asking a question, I do my best to answer it, but, keep in mind, I am only giving my thoughts and opinions. :)
Now, the reason I decided to make a disclaimer:
I just received a note from a woman that visited my web site. She had followed a link from my worksheets page and downloaded some free worksheets. In the process of doing this, the other web site told her that she could not download any more unless she paid for them. She placed blame on me for this.
Most of my links lead to someone else's site. When I created my web site years ago, it was for the sole purpose of helping others find educational sites quickly and easily. I wanted to compile all those sites that I had found in a neat, easy to navigate format. I just wanted to help people and learn about making a web site at the same time.
When you click on a link from my site and it does NOT say "www.homeschoolingadventures.com/something, something.html" in the web address bar (the long white bar at the top of the browser you are using), then it is not my site you are at.
It's very discouraging to receive a comment that is meant to be hurtful because the person feels you "wronged" them in some way. When I find a site to add to mine, I try very hard to
scan through it until I deem it appropriate enough for my site.
Over time, folks change may change the content of their site, add something that wasn't there before, or start charging money for the content. When another site changes what's on it, they don't notify me. I have no control over what they do with their site. This is why I rely so heavily on my visitors to let me know when something is wrong.
Over the past couple of years I have struggled with whether or not to keep my site going. It costs me to keep it up the way it is. Sure, I could find a cheap/free host, but then there are those nasty ads. I know how annyoing they are to me when I visit a site...especially when they pop up in front of what I want to see! No, I just can't bring myself to go that route.
I have tried every way I can think of to make money on my web site so that I can at least pay what it costs me to keep it online. As it is, I do not make enough money on it to even pay my hosting fees. I have had to go back to work outside the home in order to keep it going. (No, this is not a sympathy plee, only a plee for understanding *smile*)
When I receive a note like the one I just received, I feel so discouraged that I just want to take the whole thing down. But let me tell you why I keep it up and going. It's you. All of you that have visited and appreciated what you have found. All of you that have left such kind comments. You folks that keep returning. You are the reason I run my site and pay whatever it takes to keep it going. It is all of you that have kept ME going! My deepest and most sincere thanks!!
Love, Barb
